Hindustan Urvarak & Rasayan Limited (HURL), in collaboration with the Artificial Limbs Manufacturing Corporation of India (ALIMCO), has strengthened its corporate social responsibility (CSR) efforts by distributing assistive devices to persons with disabilities and senior citizens in Barauni, Bihar. The initiative aims to improve mobility, accessibility, and quality of life for vulnerable individuals through the distribution of modern rehabilitation aids and assistive equipment.
The programme forms part of HURL’s broader CSR initiative called “Swasthya Sathi,” launched in partnership with ALIMCO to support Divyangjan and elderly citizens living near the company’s operational units in Barauni, Gorakhpur, and Sindri. According to reports, the project is expected to benefit nearly 7,500 individuals over one year by providing essential mobility and support devices.
Officials said the distributed devices include wheelchairs, tricycles, walkers, hearing aids, artificial limbs, spectacles, and other rehabilitation equipment designed to support independent living. The initiative seeks to reduce physical barriers faced by persons with disabilities while promoting dignity, inclusion, and self-reliance within communities.
ALIMCO, a public sector enterprise under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, is one of India’s leading manufacturers and distributors of assistive devices. The organisation plays a major role in implementing government welfare schemes such as the ADIP Scheme and Rashtriya Vayoshri Yojana, which aim to improve accessibility for persons with disabilities and senior citizens.
Under the ADIP Scheme, eligible beneficiaries receive scientifically designed and certified aids and appliances intended to improve physical mobility and reduce the impact of disabilities. Experts say such programmes help individuals become more socially and economically independent by enabling easier participation in education, employment, and daily activities.
HURL officials stated that the company’s CSR strategy focuses on inclusive community development, healthcare support, education, nutrition, and accessibility. Through partnerships with organisations like ALIMCO, the company aims to ensure that social welfare initiatives directly reach underserved and vulnerable populations.
Experts note that assistive technologies play a critical role in improving the quality of life for persons with disabilities and elderly individuals, especially in rural and semi-urban areas where access to rehabilitation services often remains limited. Devices such as hearing aids, prosthetic limbs, walkers, and wheelchairs can significantly improve mobility, communication, confidence, and economic participation.
Across India, several public sector companies and institutions are increasingly collaborating with ALIMCO under CSR programmes to distribute assistive devices and promote accessibility. Similar initiatives by organisations such as Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) and GRID-INDIA have supported thousands of beneficiaries through the distribution of mobility aids and rehabilitation equipment in multiple states.
Government agencies and social welfare experts believe such initiatives are essential for building a more inclusive society. Recent policy discussions have also focused on expanding research, domestic manufacturing, and AI-driven innovation in assistive technologies to improve affordability and accessibility for Divyangjan across India.
The HURL-ALIMCO initiative in Barauni reflects a growing emphasis on community-led welfare and accessibility-focused CSR programmes. By providing assistive devices to those in need, the programme aims to empower beneficiaries with greater independence, mobility, and participation in everyday life while supporting the broader national goal of inclusive development.
