NLC India Limited (NLCIL) has launched its annual “Neer Mor” buttermilk distribution initiative in Neyveli as part of its corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme to provide relief from intense summer heat. The initiative aims to support commuters, workers, and local residents by distributing free spiced buttermilk and drinking water at major public locations across the township.
The programme was inaugurated by NLC India Chairman and Managing Director Prasanna Kumar Motupalli at the Neyveli Arch Gate Bus Stand. During the launch, the CMD highlighted the company’s continued commitment to community welfare and public wellbeing, especially during extreme summer conditions. He later personally distributed buttermilk to members of the public.
Senior company officials including Director (Human Resources) Samir Swarup and Executive Director (Legal, Medical and CSR) DVS Narayana Murthy also participated in the launch event. Simultaneous inauguration ceremonies were held at four additional locations including Central Bus Stand, Pudhukuppam Bus Stand, Block-29 Bus Stand, and Mandarakuppam Bus Stand to ensure wider access for the public.
According to the company, the “Neer Mor” initiative has become a regular seasonal welfare programme under NLCIL’s CSR activities and has been running since 2015 under the broader “Jal Dhara” campaign. The project provides free buttermilk distribution for nearly 60 days during peak summer every year to help people cope with dehydration and heat stress. Official estimates suggest that around 45,000 people benefit from the initiative daily.
NLC India stated that the buttermilk distribution is being carried out in partnership with the Milk Producers’ Cooperative Society (Aavin). The collaboration is intended to ensure regular supply and quality distribution throughout the summer season. Apart from buttermilk, purified drinking water will also be made available at the stalls to support public hydration needs.
The initiative reflects the company’s broader focus on healthcare, sanitation, welfare infrastructure, and community support in and around Neyveli. Over the years, NLCIL has implemented multiple CSR programmes including free medical camps, school infrastructure development, sanitation projects, road rehabilitation works, accessibility support, and healthcare services for nearby villages.
NLCIL’s CSR activities are aligned with its long-term objective of community development and social responsibility in mining and industrial regions. The company’s CSR policy states that peripheral village development and public welfare have remained part of its operational philosophy since inception.
The launch of the summer relief programme comes at a time when several parts of Tamil Nadu and southern India are experiencing rising temperatures and heatwave-like conditions. Public health experts often recommend regular hydration and electrolyte intake during summer to reduce the risk of heat exhaustion and dehydration, particularly for outdoor workers, commuters, elderly citizens, and vulnerable populations.
Apart from social welfare programmes, NLC India has also been actively involved in sustainability and environmental initiatives. Recent reports show the company has expanded efforts in mine reclamation, eco-restoration, renewable energy projects, and sustainable land repurposing across its operational areas in Neyveli.
Through initiatives like “Neer Mor,” NLC India continues to combine industrial operations with community-focused welfare activities aimed at improving public health, accessibility, and quality of life for residents in and around Neyveli.
