The Dharampal Satyapal Group (DS Group) has partnered with The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) to launch “Powering Barota Towards Net Zero Village”, a project to expand rooftop solar in Barota village, Karnal district, Haryana. The initiative aims to promote clean energy and support sustainable rural development.
Rooftop solar for every eligible household
The project aims to facilitate on-grid rooftop solar systems across all eligible households in the village, with a planned capacity of at least 3 kW per household. Barota has about 550 households, which leaves room for wider adoption of rooftop solar.
Barriers the project targets
Rural families trying to use government-supported solar programs often face obstacles: limited awareness, documentation requirements, gaps in technical guidance and upfront costs.
How the project will help

To address these, the initiative will focus on community awareness, beneficiary mobilisation, documentation assistance, technical guidance, financial support and facilitation of government subsidies.
Link to PM Surya Ghar
The project aims to help eligible households cut electricity expenses, adopt cleaner energy and contribute to lower carbon emissions by facilitating access to the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana and related government support.
Who is involved
The project brings together corporate social responsibility, technical expertise and government programs, with the aim of making clean energy more accessible to rural households. It is part of DS Group’s ongoing community development program in Barota, which covers areas including education, the environment and livelihoods.
Aim: a model for other villages
DS Group and TERI say they want to encourage community participation in the clean energy transition and show an approach to renewable energy adoption at the village level. The initiative aspires to make Barota a replicable model for rural clean energy development, supporting energy self-reliance, environmental sustainability and India’s broader climate action goals. TERI also hopes to deepen its collaboration with DS Group across broader ESG outcomes.
