In the vicinity of its Sindri facility, ACC, the cement and building materials division of the diverse Adani Portfolio, is assisting small and marginal farmers in implementing climate-resilient farming methods in collaboration with the Adani Foundation. The Samlapur Watershed Project, which is being carried out in collaboration with NABARD and REACT, encourages farmers in the Samlapur and Chhatatand villages of Jharkhand to use contemporary farming methods like mulching, drip irrigation, and trellis farming in order to increase yield, save water, and raise their rural incomes.
The project, which reached 84 farmers and covered 21 acres of farmland, offered two different models: trellis farming for creeper crops like bottle gourd and bitter gourd, and drip-based mulch farming for vegetables like tomato, brinjal, and chilli. Farmers received training on how to employ vertical agricultural structures and plastic mulch, which improved pest management, space utilisation, and moisture retention. When combined, these modifications enhanced the amount and quality of product.
The effect has been profound. Farmers reported higher female engagement in agriculture, reduced labour and water expenses, and income increases of 40–60%. Additionally, the approach strengthened community ownership of farming practices and improved soil protection.
In rain-fed areas, ACC is facilitating long-term livelihood security by encouraging the production of income crops using effective, community-led techniques. One farm, one family at a time, this model’s success suggests that it could be adopted more widely in nearby areas.
