By installing a fleet of 40 Electric Vehicle (EV) Bulkers at its Zinc Smelter Debari in ZincCity – Udaipur, Hindustan Zinc Limited has made a significant contribution to sustainable logistics. These bulkers, which are being used in partnership with Enviiiro Wheels Mobility Pvt. Ltd., have an 8-year contract to transport calcine, a sand-like by-product of roasting, from Zinc Smelter Debari to the largest single-location integrated zinc-lead smelter in the world, located in Chittorgarh. Ten EV bulkers from the initial batch have been successfully deployed; the remaining units will follow in the upcoming months.
The programme strengthens the company’s resolve to reach Net Zero by 2050 or earlier and represents a major turning point in its path towards sustainable mobility. The company’s new electric vehicle fleet is expected to substantially cut carbon emissions associated with logistics, building on its current fleet of LNG and battery-powered trucks, renewable energy integration, and improved energy-efficiency initiatives. In addition to improving fleet availability, this shift will increase operational safety, dependability, and efficiency for the entire business. The CEO of Hindustan Zinc Limited, Arun Misra, spoke at the event and stated, “We are integrating sustainability into the foundation of our logistics strategy to create a clean, connected, and future-ready environment. In addition to lowering our carbon footprint, these electric mobility solutions are also enhancing worker safety, operational effectiveness, and long-term value—all of which are in line with our overarching goal of decarbonising operations and fostering India’s green industrial development.
On the same day, Hindustan Zinc strengthened its green mobility strategy by signing a new Memorandum of Understanding with Enviiiro Wheels Mobility to implement electric buses for staff transportation at Zinc Smelter Debari. By switching from traditional diesel-powered buses to electric ones, Scope 3 emissions will be further reduced while providing its employees with a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable journey.
Praveen Somani, CEO of Enviiiro Wheels Mobility Pvt Ltd, commented on this milestone, saying, “Hindustan Zinc’s innovative endeavour marks a pivotal moment in India’s manufacturing landscape.” We firmly think that our green logistics solutions are essential to furthering India’s environmental goals, and we are dedicated to Hindustan Zinc’s decarbonisation agenda. As part of our continued partnership with Hindustan Zinc, we are pleased to provide Vedanta with 40 more electric bulkers. Clean and environmentally friendly transportation solutions, in our opinion, will be essential to helping enterprises meet their sustainability targets. Hindustan Zinc is still setting the standard for the industry and making great progress. Hindustan Zinc is enhancing its operating efficiency and adding more renewable energy to its energy mix in an effort to lessen its carbon impact. For example, the corporation started the first flow of renewable energy in the previous fiscal year and signed a 530 MW renewable energy power delivery agreement that runs around the clock. Additionally, Hindustan Zinc has invested heavily in energy-efficient projects that are cutting edge, such as upgrading the turbines at captive power plants, increasing the efficiency of cellhouses, installing variable frequency motors, and switching from traditional fuels to cleaner options.
The first Indian business to join the International Council on Mining & Metals (ICMM) 2025 is Hindustan Zinc. It is noteworthy because it is the first mining and metals firm in India to get validated Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) targets, which correspond to the ambitious global warming threshold of 1.5°C. Additionally, the company has been named among the top 66 corporations worldwide across 62 industry categories and within the top 1% in the S&P Global Sustainability Yearbook for the second year in a row. With programmes like these, Hindustan Zinc keeps raising the bar for environmentally friendly business practices and solidifying its position as a driving force behind India’s transition to a low-carbon, independent, and future-ready economy.
