The Polo Hotels Group has launched a new Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative titled “Clean Sohra, Green Sohra” in Sohra, aimed at promoting environmental sustainability and responsible tourism.
The initiative focuses primarily on improving waste management and cleanliness in Sohra—one of Meghalaya’s most popular tourist destinations, also known as Cherrapunji. With increasing tourist footfall, the region has been facing growing challenges related to littering and waste disposal.
As part of the programme, the company has introduced measures such as organised clean-up drives, awareness campaigns, and better waste collection systems. Infrastructure support has also been provided, including waste transport vehicles, signage promoting cleanliness, and resources to improve sanitation practices.
The initiative aligns with the broader “Clean, Green and Safe Sohra” campaign led by local authorities and community bodies. It emphasises collaboration between the hospitality sector, residents, and local organisations to create long-term environmental impact.
A key aspect of the project is community participation. The programme encourages both locals and tourists to adopt responsible habits, reduce littering, and contribute to preserving the natural beauty of the region. Educational outreach and volunteer engagement are being used to build awareness and foster civic responsibility.
The company has also highlighted its commitment to sustainable hospitality, stating that such initiatives are part of a broader effort to ensure tourism growth does not come at the cost of environmental degradation.
Overall, the “Clean Sohra, Green Sohra” initiative reflects a growing trend in the hospitality industry—where businesses are taking active roles in community development and environmental conservation. By combining infrastructure support, awareness, and local partnerships, the initiative aims to transform Sohra into a cleaner, more sustainable tourist destination.
