On October 16, 2025, “Wild Tamil Nadu”, which was produced by Sundram Fasteners Ltd., made its debut at Chennai’s PVR Sathyam. This groundbreaking wildlife documentary, which was directed by Kalyan Varma and produced by Nature inFocus with assistance from the Tamil Nadu Forest Department, intends to instil in its viewers a greater feeling of pride and commitment to conservation while showcasing the state’s breathtaking natural diversity.
The incredible biodiversity of Tamil Nadu—where parched deserts, coral reefs, and rainforests come together to form one of the planet’s most distinctive ecological landscapes—is revealed in the breathtaking new natural history documentary Wild Tamil Nadu. During the documentary, audiences will travel across some of Tamil Nadu’s most breathtaking landscapes, see a remarkable variety of wildlife, and learn fascinating animal behaviour stories that have never been seen on film before.
Wild Tamil Nadu explores the region by showcasing its five traditional landscapes: Kurinji (mountains), Mullai (forests), Marutham (croplands), Neithal (coasts), and Palai (desert zones), all of which are influenced by ancient Sangam literature. Written more than 4,500 years ago, these lyrical categories are still relevant today since they are timeless depictions of Tamil Nadu’s diverse ecological fabric.
From well-known giants like elephants and leopards to lesser-known wonders like fireflies, lion-tailed macaques, and the elusive Madras hedgehog, this video explores thriving ecosystems brimming with life. It creates a striking image of biodiversity and peaceful cohabitation in the southernmost state of India by fusing natural history with undiscovered wild tales.
The hour-long film Wild Tamil Nadu, which was produced by Sundram Fasteners Limited and directed by Emmy-nominated Kalyan Varma, takes viewers to a place where the stark contrasts of nature coexist and traditional knowledge still governs the relationship between people and the wild. Over the course of four years, a committed group of South Indian cameramen captured the country’s varied and breathtaking landscapes for the movie.
Three-time Grammy Award winner Ricky Kej wrote the soundtrack for the documentary, which combines orchestral compositions with Carnatic customs to enhance the voices of these settings. Renowned actor Arvind Swamy narrates the film, bringing the narrative to life.
“We at Sundram Fasteners are honoured to back programmes that honour and protect our natural heritage. The spirit of Tamil Nadu’s wilderness, its thriving ecosystems, and the close relationship between humans and nature are all captured in this documentary, which transcends the lens,” stated Ms Arathi Krishna, Managing Director of Sundram Fasteners Ltd. “We hope that the full film, which we are releasing today, will inspire a renewed commitment to protect what makes our planet truly extraordinary,” Krishna added.
Kalyan Varma referred to the project as “one of the most significant of my career.” My goal was to convey a more profound tale of a place where wilderness and culture are inextricably linked. The remarkable diversity of habitats that Tamil Nadu supports makes it unique. My goal in making this documentary is to shed light on such tales and draw attention to the priceless, irreplaceable diversity that deserves our collective defence.
“Writing the music for Wild Tamil Nadu, a movie that highlights Tamil Nadu’s stunning natural beauty, is an enormous honour,” says Ricky Kej. Working with Director Kalyan Varma was a logical choice for someone who has devoted their career to writing music that honours the natural world and spreads awareness of social issues. In addition to helping him realise his stunning vision, working on this movie let me learn more about Tamil Nadu’s biodiversity. In order to give these breathtaking settings a permanent sound identity, I felt obligated to compose music that accurately captures the state and its amazing wildlife. Voices, choirs, luscious orchestras, violins, Carnatic flutes, morsing, veenas, and other instruments from Tamil Nadu and beyond will all be heard. The music flowed naturally and reflected both the spirit of the movie and my personal interest in the topic.
