Infosys, in partnership with environmental organisation Siruthuli, has launched a major lake restoration initiative aimed at rejuvenating Chennai’s Thangal Lake and strengthening urban water sustainability. Supported through a CSR grant from Infosys, the project seeks to restore the ecological health of the waterbody, improve water storage capacity, enhance biodiversity, and create long-term environmental benefits for surrounding communities.
Thangal Lake, located in Chennai’s Sholinganallur region, has faced years of environmental degradation due to silt accumulation, declining water quality, and pressure from rapid urbanisation. Recognising the need for urgent intervention, Infosys and Siruthuli collaborated with local government agencies to undertake a comprehensive restoration programme focused on reviving the lake’s natural ecosystem and improving its role in urban water management.
A key component of the project involved extensive desilting activities to remove accumulated sediment from the lake bed. This effort significantly increased the lake’s water-holding capacity, enabling it to store nearly double the volume of water compared to its earlier condition. Improved storage capacity is expected to strengthen rainwater retention, support groundwater recharge, and contribute to flood mitigation during periods of heavy rainfall.
The rejuvenation initiative also included strengthening lake bunds using excavated soil and installing systems to regulate water inflow. These measures are designed to improve the lake’s hydrological performance and ensure better management of water resources throughout the year. By enhancing the lake’s ability to capture and retain rainwater, the project supports Chennai’s broader efforts to improve water security and climate resilience.
Beyond water conservation, the project places strong emphasis on ecological restoration. Native vegetation has been introduced around the lake, while specially developed biodiversity islands have been created to provide habitats for birds and other wildlife. Such interventions are expected to improve local biodiversity and restore ecological balance within the area. Environmental experts believe that healthy urban water bodies play a critical role in supporting wildlife, improving air quality, and enhancing overall environmental sustainability.
The restored lake is also being developed as a community-friendly green space. Plans include walkways, landscaped areas, and public amenities that will encourage residents to engage with and appreciate the rejuvenated ecosystem. By integrating environmental restoration with public access, the project aims to promote awareness about water conservation and sustainable urban development.
