The initiative, launched in partnership with Y4D Foundation, aims to improve night-time safety and mobility in rural areas, especially for women, children and elderly residents.
REC Foundation, the corporate social responsibility (CSR) arm of REC Limited, has partnered with Y4D Foundation to install 350 solar-powered street light systems across six districts of West Bengal. The initiative aims to improve public safety, strengthen rural infrastructure and promote the use of clean energy in underserved communities.
A Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) between the two organisations was signed on November 3, 2026. Under the agreement, REC Foundation will provide financial support for the installation, while Y4D Foundation will implement the project.

The project will cover Purba Bardhaman, Bankura, North 24 Parganas, Hooghly, Birbhum and Paschim Medinipur districts. The solar street lights are expected to improve visibility in public spaces and make it safer for residents to move around after sunset. Women, children and elderly people are likely to benefit the most from better-lit roads and community areas.
The improved lighting will also support safer mobility and make essential local infrastructure more accessible to rural residents. The agreement was signed in the presence of L. B. Nautiyal, Head of Department (CSR), REC Limited, and Bijesh Kumar, Vice President of Y4D Foundation, along with officials from both organisations.
Apart from improving rural safety, the project also focuses on promoting renewable energy at the grassroots level. Solar-powered lighting will provide a sustainable alternative to conventional street lighting and support environmentally friendly infrastructure development.Through this initiative, REC Foundation aims to address basic infrastructure needs while combining social development with clean energy solutions.
