Delhi govt to begin month-long ‘Seva Sankalp Abhiyan’ from September 17
The Delhi government will launch a month-long public outreach and welfare campaign, ‘Seva Sankalp Abhiyan’, beginning September 17 and continuing until October 17 to commemorate Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s birthday, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said on Monday.
The campaign will bring together a series of welfare and civic initiatives, including blood donation camps, medical check-ups for senior citizens, registration of workers, cleanliness programmes and plantation drives.
At a press conference, Gupta said projects involving an estimated ₹13,820 crore would be inaugurated or have their foundation stones laid as part of the month-long programme.
According to the Chief Minister, the campaign seeks to make the Prime Minister’s birthday an occasion for a sustained public service initiative, placing the idea of service at the core of the government’s functioning.
The programme will open on September 17 with a mega blood donation drive organised by the Health Department. The camp aims to collect 2,500 units of blood in one day.
Medical screening camps will also be held for nearly 25,000 senior citizens across the capital. The initiative will be carried out jointly by the Health and Social Welfare departments.
The Labour Department will conduct registration drives and health examinations for workers, including those employed in construction, enabling eligible people to avail themselves of government welfare schemes and services.
The government will also introduce Delhi’s State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (SOTTO) platform. The initiative will seek to spread awareness about organ donation and encourage citizens to enrol as donors.
The Women and Child Development Department will organise welfare-related activities for children staying in child care institutions.
Yamuna cleaning, green initiatives to receive special attention
The cleaning and rejuvenation of the Yamuna will feature prominently in the campaign. Projects estimated at around ₹8,000 crore for the river’s cleaning and restoration are expected to be inaugurated or see their foundation stones laid during this period.
Special cleanliness campaigns will be undertaken along the Yamuna, as well as in wards and Assembly constituencies across Delhi.
The Environment Department, under the ‘Clean Delhi, Green Delhi’ campaign, has set an ambitious target of planting 70 lakh trees and saplings. Plantation activities will be carried out across all wards.
Young citizens will be encouraged to participate through the ‘Mere Sapnon Ka Bharat’ competition. The contest will feature painting, speech and reel-making events cent-red on participants’ vision of the India they want to see.
The government expects nearly five lakh students from around 5,000 schools to participate. Students from Delhi government schools, private institutions, municipal schools and New Delhi Municipal Council schools, along with university students, will be eligible to take part.
The evening of September 17 will feature the ‘Aashirwad ka Diya’ programme, under which beneficiaries across Delhi will light lamps at their residences to mark the Prime Minister’s birthday.
Three-day ‘Seva Setu’ camps planned in all 70 Assembly constituencies
The ‘Seva Setu Abhiyan’ will involve three-day camps across each of Delhi’s 70 Assembly constituencies. Officials representing different departments will attend these camps to brief residents about Central and Delhi government schemes, help eligible citizens complete registrations and facilitate access to government services.
Residents will also be able to engage directly with officials during ‘Sushasan Seva Samvad’ sessions. These interactions will provide information about government projects, welfare schemes and governance initiatives.
An ‘Innovation Challenge’ will offer young innovators an opportunity to present their ideas. Delhi is one of five centres selected across the country for the initiative, and participants from neighbouring states will also be connected to the Delhi centre.
As part of ‘Seva Ke Rang, Rashtra Ke Sang’, participants will take part in rangoli and mandala art activities based on themes such as national unity, education and environmental conservation. A large human rangoli involving thousands of people is also proposed.
The government will also honour the contribution of Delhi’s anganwadi workforce through ‘Aangan Ka Milan’. All anganwadi workers will be felicitated under the programme. Government figures show that Delhi has 10,897 anganwadi centres and approximately 21,350 anganwadi workers.
The campaign will further feature a ‘Seva Jyoti Kalash Yatra’, with public representatives and citizens taking part.
Projects worth ₹13,820 crore to be showcased
The month-long programme will not be limited to welfare and public outreach. It will also showcase the Delhi government’s development work, with projects worth approximately ₹13,820 crore across departments scheduled for inauguration or foundation stone laying.
Gupta also pointed to several major infrastructure projects in Delhi and neighbouring areas completed or undertaken during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s tenure. These include the Delhi-Meerut Expressway, Delhi-Dehradun Expressway, Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, Dwarka Expressway, UER-2 and the Eastern and Western Peripheral Expressways.
The Chief Minister said infrastructure projects in Delhi that have been approved, are currently being implemented or have been proposed during Modi’s tenure have a combined estimated value of around ₹12.25 lakh crore.
She also highlighted the Jewar Airport, Regional Rapid Transit System, expansion of the Delhi Metro and the signal-free corridor at Dhaula Kuan. Among the major venues cited were Yashobhoomi and Bharat Mandapam.
Gupta said the growth of Delhi’s infrastructure has improved connectivity and increased the capital’s ability to host major international gatherings, including the recently organised 18th BRICS Summit.
The Chief Minister also wished Prime Minister Modi on his birthday and expressed hope that he would continue to remain healthy and serve the country.
