Samsung’s CSR funds new quantum research lab at IISc

Samsung Semiconductor India Research and IISc inaugurate a CSR-backed Quantum Research Lab in Bengaluru to build quantum and semiconductor research and talent.

Samsung Semiconductor India Research (SSIR) and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) have inaugurated a Quantum Research Lab on the IISc campus in Bengaluru, set up with CSR support from SSIR. The lab, opened on 15 October 2026, aims to strengthen India’s research capabilities in quantum technologies and advanced semiconductors.

What the lab will study

The lab supports research across qubit characterization, cryogenic electronics, quantum-device reliability, and single-photon sources and detectors. It also covers the integration of advanced semiconductor materials with quantum systems. IISc says the lab has already supported work on quantum devices built from two-dimensional materials, as well as emerging device concepts tested under cryogenic conditions, within its Department of Electronic Systems Engineering.

Access beyond IISc

Quantum research depends on specialized experimental equipment that is costly to buy and to run, which can put it out of reach for many institutions. The lab is meant to widen access by offering structured training and hands-on research exposure to students and researchers from institutions across India. The aim is to help build a broader national pool of talent for the country’s emerging quantum technology ecosystem.

Link to the semiconductor workforce program

The IISc–SSIR collaboration will also feed into the India Semiconductor Workforce Development Program (ISWDP), a skill-building program that addresses workforce gaps in device physics, process development, modelling, simulation, characterization and reliability. Selected learning modules on quantum materials and devices, cryogenic electronics and qubit technologies will be part of this effort.

Why quantum and semiconductors together

The lab sits where quantum technologies meet advanced semiconductor research. That overlap opens room to explore new materials, device designs and architectures that could support future technology platforms. The partners position semiconductors and quantum technologies as areas of the next wave of innovation, where research capability and trained people matter.

What the partners are aiming for

The collaboration is framed as an industry-academia partnership that builds lasting infrastructure while expanding access to knowledge. SSIR, Samsung’s semiconductor research and development centre in India, is supporting the lab as part of its CSR work. IISc describes the support as strengthening both frontier quantum research and semiconductor workforce development, alongside its wider role in building national capabilities in quantum computing and next-generation semiconductors.
