Jindal Ferrous commissions ₹5,000-crore Odisha steel plant

Jindal Ferrous commissions ₹5,000-crore Odisha steel plantJindal Ferrous Limited (JFL) has announced the commissioning of its integrated blast furnace facility in Jajpur, Odisha. The facility is the company’s first manufacturing complex and has been developed with an investment of over ₹5,000 crore. It includes waste recycling, water recycling and zero-discharge features, and is expected to generate jobs for more than 2,000 people.

What the complex includes

The integrated blast furnace complex comprises a sinter plant, a 2.2 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) steel melt shop (SMS) and associated infrastructure. Major equipment suppliers are based in Europe. They include Paul Wurth S.A., part of Germany’s SMS Group, for the blast furnace; UHT of Sweden for Granshot; Primetals of Austria for the sinter plant, SMS-BOF and caster; and Danieli of Italy for the ladle furnace and hot metal desulphurisation systems.

Recycling and resource use

The integrated configuration is designed to recycle metallurgical waste through the sinter plant and make use of process gases across operations. The facility also includes water recycling and environmental management systems, and follows a zero-discharge approach. Effluent treatment systems are part of the setup, while sewage treatment and reverse osmosis (RO) infrastructure is planned for implementation. The announcement does not give figures for water use, emissions or energy consumption.

Automation and process control

The blast furnace is equipped with a Level-2 automation platform that includes a blast furnace expert model. It also has high top-pressure operation and dry gas cleaning systems, which are meant to improve process stability and operational efficiency. The company positions the facility as one of the region’s most modern steel facilities.

Location and partners

The plant is in Odisha, close to key raw material sources, with access to pellets and port connectivity. It is backed by long-term iron ore linkage arrangements. To support a faster ramp-up of operations, JFL has entered into a technical collaboration with Japan’s JFE Steel Corporation, which is meant to let the company draw on JFE’s technical knowledge to produce quality steel efficiently.

The project is expected to generate employment opportunities for more than 2,000 people. It is also expected to contribute to the economic and social development of surrounding communities.
