The Karnataka government is set to launch a major initiative to strengthen public education by upgrading 1,000 government schools over the next two years with the help of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds. The move is aimed at improving school infrastructure, expanding access to quality education, and encouraging greater participation from private companies in the state’s education sector.
According to the proposed plan, schools selected for the programme will be transformed into Karnataka Public Schools (KPS), which provide education from pre-primary to Class 12 within a single campus. These institutions are designed to offer improved infrastructure, better learning facilities, and bilingual education, making government schools more attractive to students and parents alike. The upgraded schools will be established in gram panchayats and urban local bodies where KPS institutions are currently unavailable.
To oversee the implementation, the state government has constituted a Karnataka State Community and Corporate Social Responsibility (CCSR) Monitoring Committee chaired by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. The committee will coordinate with companies, monitor the utilisation of CSR contributions, and ensure that projects are completed within the planned timeframe. The initiative seeks to create a structured partnership between the government and the corporate sector to improve educational infrastructure across Karnataka.
Under the programme, corporates will be encouraged to contribute towards constructing new school buildings, modern classrooms, laboratories, libraries, sports facilities, and digital learning infrastructure. The government will provide land, standardised designs, and administrative support, while private firms can fund the development work through their CSR allocations. Companies supporting the project may also receive co-branding opportunities by having their names associated with the schools they help develop.
The initiative builds on Karnataka’s ongoing efforts to improve public education through CSR partnerships. In recent years, the government has repeatedly appealed to industries to direct more CSR spending towards government schools, arguing that significant funds generated within the state should benefit local communities instead of being utilised elsewhere. Officials believe that increased corporate participation can accelerate the development of high-quality public schools without placing additional pressure on the state’s finances.
Karnataka Public Schools have gained popularity in several districts due to their integrated education model, English-medium sections, and improved infrastructure. The government hopes that expanding this network will increase enrolment in government schools while narrowing the gap between public and private education. The upgraded institutions are expected to provide students with better academic resources, safer campuses, and an improved learning environment.
The latest proposal reflects the government’s broader vision of strengthening public education through public-private collaboration. By mobilising CSR funds and involving corporate partners in school development, Karnataka aims to create modern educational institutions that can serve communities across the state while ensuring that children from all backgrounds have access to quality learning facilities. If implemented successfully, the programme could become one of the state’s largest education infrastructure initiatives driven through corporate social responsibility.
