The Odisha government has intensified its focus on accelerating development activities in coal-bearing regions, with Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari issuing firm directions to coal companies to speed up the implementation of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) projects. The directive came during a high-level review meeting involving senior officials and representatives of major coal and power companies operating in the state.
The meeting primarily reviewed the progress of CSR initiatives in key coal belt districts, including Jharsuguda, Angul, Sambalpur, and Sundargarh. These areas, rich in mineral resources, often face developmental challenges despite hosting major industrial operations. The minister emphasized the need for timely execution of welfare projects to ensure that local communities benefit directly from industrial activities in their regions.
One of the major highlights of the review was the proposed establishment of a university in Jharsuguda. The minister instructed concerned authorities to immediately identify suitable land and begin the process without delay. He stressed that education infrastructure is vital for long-term regional development and should be treated as a priority project.
In addition to the university, several other significant projects were discussed, including the development of a cardiac care hospital and a stadium in Lakhanpur. These initiatives are expected to improve healthcare access and create better recreational facilities for residents in the coal belt areas. The minister directed companies to mobilize the required funds promptly and initiate work at the earliest.
A key concern raised during the meeting was the delay in utilization and disbursement of CSR funds. Taking a strict stance, Pujari instructed officials, particularly from Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL), to clear all pending CSR allocations without further delay. He underscored that funds earmarked for community welfare must not remain idle and should be effectively used for the intended purposes.
The minister also called for better coordination between government departments and corporate entities to ensure smooth execution of projects. He highlighted the importance of transparency, accountability, and regular monitoring to avoid bottlenecks and ensure that projects are completed within stipulated timelines. Efficient utilization of resources, he noted, is essential to maximize the impact of CSR initiatives.
Senior officials from various departments and companies, including NTPC and OPGC, participated in the meeting. District collectors from the concerned regions also joined virtually, reflecting the importance of coordinated efforts at both state and district levels.
The government’s push to expedite CSR projects aligns with its broader objective of inclusive growth in industrial regions. By ensuring that coal companies actively contribute to local development, the state aims to bridge infrastructure gaps and improve the quality of life for people living in mining-affected areas.
