A new social enterprise café, Asha – The Hope Café, has been launched in Delhi Cantonment with the objective of creating meaningful employment and skill development opportunities for youth with special needs from armed forces families. The initiative combines hospitality training, entrepreneurship, and livelihood generation to help participants build confidence, independence, and long-term careers in the service sector.
The café has been established with Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) support from Diageo India through United Spirits Limited and will operate under the guidance of the Army Women’s Welfare Association. The project aims to create an inclusive workplace where young individuals with special needs can receive professional training while gaining practical work experience in a real hospitality environment.
Designed as a professionally managed premium café, Asha – The Hope Café offers a blend of hospitality services and social impact. The facility features modern infrastructure, curated food and beverage offerings, and structured training modules that focus on various aspects of café management and operations. Participants will be trained in hospitality services, bakery operations, customer engagement, financial management, and entrepreneurship.
The initiative seeks to address a critical challenge faced by many families of children and youth with special needs — access to sustainable employment opportunities. By equipping participants with industry-relevant skills and workplace exposure, the café aims to improve employability and encourage self-reliance. The model also promotes dignity through meaningful work, helping beneficiaries become active contributors to society and the economy.
According to representatives of Diageo India, the project aligns with the company’s broader “Learning for Life” programme, which focuses on creating employment pathways in the hospitality sector for underserved communities. Over the years, the initiative has supported skill-building programs for youth, persons with disabilities, and marginalized groups across India. Through its partnership with AWWA, the company is extending these opportunities to members of armed forces families and individuals with special needs.
The Army Women’s Welfare Association, one of India’s oldest welfare organizations supporting military families, will play a key role in managing and mentoring the project. The organization has a long history of working for the welfare of widows, veterans’ families, and children with special needs, making it a natural partner for the initiative.
Beyond employment generation, the café has been envisioned as a scalable social enterprise that can be replicated across military cantonments in the future. The goal is to create a sustainable model where hospitality businesses become platforms for inclusion, skill development, and community empowerment. If successful, similar cafés could be established in other locations, expanding opportunities for many more young people with special needs.
By blending hospitality with social impact, Asha – The Hope Café represents a significant step toward creating inclusive workplaces and sustainable livelihoods. The initiative highlights how corporate partnerships and community organizations can work together to empower vulnerable groups and foster long-term social change.
