In a major step towards supporting education and student welfare, NLC India Limited announced that its subsidiary, NLC Tamil Nadu Power Limited (NTPL), has provided a dedicated student bus to the Government Medical College and Hospital in Ramanathapuram under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme. The initiative is aimed at improving transportation facilities and ensuring safe daily travel for students pursuing medical education at the institution.
The Government Medical College and Hospital, established in 2021 in Ramanathapuram district, has rapidly grown into an important centre for medical education in the region. At present, nearly 400 students are enrolled at the college. With many students travelling from surrounding areas for classes and training, transportation had become a major concern for the institution. Recognising the need for reliable commuting support, the college administration formally approached NTPL for assistance.
Responding positively to the request, NTPL sanctioned the project as part of its ongoing CSR efforts focused on education, healthcare, and community development. The company invested around ₹45 lakh for the initiative, while the procurement cost of the bus was approximately ₹32.83 lakh. NTPL also completed all necessary procedures related to purchase, vehicle registration, and statutory approvals before officially handing over the bus to the institution.
The newly provided bus is expected to significantly improve the daily travel experience of students by offering safer and more dependable transportation. College authorities believe the service will especially benefit students who commute from distant rural areas and face difficulties in accessing regular public transport. The initiative is likely to reduce travel-related stress and help students focus better on their academic and clinical responsibilities.
A formal handover ceremony was organised to mark the occasion. During the event, Samir Swarup handed over the bus to Subitha in the presence of NTPL Chief Executive Officer K. Anandaramanujam and other senior company officials, including S. Saravanan and Ramachandrappa. The ceremony highlighted the collaborative efforts between the educational institution and NTPL in promoting student welfare and strengthening educational infrastructure in the region.
While NTPL has borne the cost of procuring and delivering the vehicle, the medical college administration will manage recurring operational expenses such as fuel charges, maintenance, insurance, and driver salary. This arrangement ensures the long-term sustainability of the transportation service while allowing the institution to operate the bus according to student requirements.
The initiative reflects NTPL’s broader commitment to community welfare and social development through meaningful CSR interventions. By investing in student transportation, the company aims to remove logistical barriers that may hinder access to quality medical education. The project also aligns with the government’s larger objective of strengthening educational infrastructure in aspirational districts like Ramanathapuram.
Through such welfare-driven initiatives, NTPL continues to contribute towards inclusive development and community empowerment. The dedicated student bus is expected to play an important role in enhancing convenience, safety, and accessibility for medical students, thereby supporting the growth of healthcare education in the region.
