Vedanta’s Bharat Aluminium Company Limited (BALCO) is playing a significant role in improving employment opportunities for rural youth in Chhattisgarh through its Vedanta Skill School initiative. The programme, launched as part of the company’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) efforts, focuses on vocational training and skill development to help young people become financially independent and job-ready.
The Vedanta Skill School has emerged as one of the leading vocational training centres in the state. Established in 2010, the institution offers free residential training to youth from rural and tribal communities in trades that are aligned with current industry demands. These include welding, electrician work, hospitality, sewing machine operation, fitter training, solar PV technician courses, and mobile repairing.
According to BALCO, the initiative aims to bridge the gap between industry requirements and employable skills among rural youth. The company believes that skill development can become a powerful tool for socio-economic transformation in underserved areas where employment opportunities are limited.
The training curriculum is designed in accordance with guidelines laid down by the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC). Students receive practical exposure, technical education, personality development support, and placement assistance after completing their courses. The duration of the programmes generally ranges between 45 and 65 days, depending on the trade selected.
Over the years, the initiative has expanded significantly. Vedanta and BALCO state that more than 12,000 youth from Chhattisgarh have been trained through the skill schools located in Korba, Kawardha, and Surguja regions. Many graduates have secured jobs in industries such as automotive, power, manufacturing, hospitality, and renewable energy across India.
The programme has partnered with several government and institutional schemes, including the Mukhyamantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (MMKVY), NABARD, Skill India Impact Bond, and the National Institute of Solar Energy. These collaborations have helped strengthen training quality and improve placement opportunities for students.
One of the major achievements of the Vedanta Skill School is receiving a five-star rating under the Skill Management and Accreditation of Training Centres (SMART) programme by the NSDC. This recognition made it one of the highest-rated skill development centres in Chhattisgarh. The certification acknowledged the institution’s infrastructure, quality of training, and placement performance.
BALCO officials say the initiative is not limited to providing employment but also aims to create long-term social impact. By helping young people secure stable incomes, the programme contributes to improving household earnings and reducing migration from rural areas. Several trainees have also started supporting their families financially after securing jobs in reputed companies.
Vedanta has highlighted that skill development remains a core pillar of its community development strategy. The company believes that empowering youth with employable skills can accelerate economic growth and strengthen local communities.
The initiative reflects the growing role of CSR programmes in supporting livelihood generation and workforce development in rural India. Through continued expansion of vocational training and industry partnerships, Vedanta’s Skill School is helping create sustainable career opportunities for thousands of young people in Chhattisgarh.
