The Tamil Nadu government is scheduled to launch the expanded Perunthalaivar Kamaraj Breakfast Scheme for students from Classes 6 to 8 on September 22. The launch, which was earlier planned for Thursday, was deferred due to the Chief Minister’s overseas visit.
Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay will inaugurate the expanded programme after his return from London, where he is attending meetings as part of efforts to attract new investments to Tamil Nadu.
The scheme was initially scheduled to be launched on Thursday, coinciding with the birth anniversary of social reformer Periyar. However, the government postponed the event as the Chief Minister was not available to attend the inauguration.
Social Welfare Secretary Pallavi Baldev has communicated the revised schedule to District Collectors and instructed them to ensure that all arrangements are completed ahead of the rollout.
The expanded scheme will be implemented throughout Tamil Nadu, with the exception of Chengalpattu and Tiruppur districts, where Assembly by-elections are currently being held. The Model Code of Conduct applicable during the elections is believed to be the reason for keeping these two districts outside the initial rollout.
The TVK government renamed the existing Chief Minister’s Breakfast Scheme as the Perunthalaivar Kamaraj Breakfast Scheme to honour former Chief Minister K. Kamaraj, who is widely associated with the expansion of school education and student welfare initiatives in the state.
District Collectors will oversee preparations covering beneficiary identification, food supply arrangements, kitchen infrastructure, sanitation and hygiene, as well as the timely serving of breakfast to students.
Schools are expected to receive detailed operational guidelines before the September 22 launch. Ministers, elected representatives and senior officials are also likely to attend inauguration events organised at various locations across the state.The expanded programme is expected to form a significant part of the government’s education and child-welfare initiatives following its assumption of office.
