Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah underlined the importance of sustainable development and cooperative-led growth while participating in the Amrit Mahotsav celebrations of the Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) at Dahegam in Gujarat’s Gandhinagar district. The event marked a significant milestone for the APMC and showcased the government’s focus on strengthening agricultural infrastructure, environmental conservation, and rural prosperity.
As part of the celebrations, Shah inaugurated a newly developed vegetable sub-yard aimed at improving market facilities for farmers and traders. The upgraded infrastructure is expected to streamline the marketing of agricultural produce, provide better services to cultivators, and enhance efficiency in the farm supply chain. The initiative aligns with the Centre’s broader vision of modernising agricultural markets and strengthening the cooperative sector to improve farmers’ incomes.
The programme was attended by Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Dahegam APMC Chairman Sumeru Amin, representatives of cooperative institutions, APMC members, and several other dignitaries. During the event, Amit Shah also interacted with members of the APMC board and released a commemorative publication prepared to mark the institution’s Amrit Mahotsav, recognising its long-standing contribution to Gujarat’s agricultural economy.
Emphasising environmental responsibility alongside economic development, Shah participated in the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign by planting a sapling. The initiative encourages citizens to contribute to environmental conservation through tree plantation while honouring their mothers. The campaign has emerged as a key component of the government’s efforts to increase green cover and promote public participation in protecting natural resources.
Earlier in the day, Shah also took part in several environmental and urban development initiatives in Ahmedabad. He participated in a large-scale plantation drive under the city’s ‘Mission Five Million Trees’ campaign, which aims to significantly expand Ahmedabad’s green cover. In addition, he inaugurated development projects worth nearly ₹405 crore and launched 101 Oxygen Parks along with 155 air-conditioned electric BRTS buses to encourage sustainable urban mobility and improve environmental quality. These initiatives reflect the government’s emphasis on balancing infrastructure development with ecological conservation.
Speaking on the occasion, Shah highlighted that the cooperative movement plays a vital role in empowering farmers, strengthening rural economies, and ensuring better marketing opportunities for agricultural producers. He noted that under the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “Sahkar Se Samriddhi” initiative, the government continues to modernise agricultural marketing systems while expanding the reach of cooperative institutions across the country. The newly inaugurated vegetable sub-yard is expected to provide farmers with improved access to organised markets and better post-harvest facilities.
The Amrit Mahotsav celebrations served as a platform to highlight the contribution of cooperative institutions to Gujarat’s agricultural development and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to promoting sustainable growth, environmental protection, and farmer welfare through modern infrastructure and community-driven initiatives.
