Azim Premji Foundation to back 100 grassroots NGO founders

The Azim Premji Foundation has launched a Social Startups Programme to help development sector professionals set up and lead new civil society organizations that serve underserved communities.

The Azim Premji Foundation has launched a Social Startups Programme to help development sector professionals set up and lead new civil society organizations that serve underserved communities. The first cohort is expected to include about 100 participants across four geographies: Odisha, North-East India, Eastern Uttar Pradesh and Bengaluru Urban. Applications are open from 1 November to 31 December 2026.

Who the program is for

The program aims to help professionals who have grassroots experience but lack the money and guidance to set up organizations of their own. It will give them financial assistance, mentorship and learning opportunities to build locally rooted organizations. The Foundation says it is distinct from its regular grants program, which supports existing, registered organizations, both mature and early-stage.

Who can apply

Applicants must be under 40, hold a graduate degree and have at least three years of ground-level experience in the development sector. They must intend to set up and lead a new civil society organisation, be willing to relocate and make a long-term commitment to their chosen geography. People who have already registered an organisation are not eligible.

Areas of work

rural livelihood        children welfare

The program will support organizations working in areas such as rural livelihoods, youth, disability, children’s welfare, the well-being of Adivasi communities and welfare rights. It also covers work in urban informal settlements, including creches and community sanitation.

How it works

The program has two phases. The first is an eight-month seeding phase, scheduled to begin on 1 April 2027. Participants receive financial support to work with communities, understand local needs and develop their organizations, along with guidance on registration, governance and statutory compliance.

By the end of this phase they are expected to have registered their organizations and can submit grant proposals for evaluation. Those who meet the criteria may receive a two-year seed grant. Participants will be assessed in November and December 2027 for progression to the grant phase.

Selection and dates

Selection includes eligibility screening, document review, a statement of purpose, an online interview and an in-person panel discussion. Applications close on 31 December 2026. The Foundation’s website has the full eligibility details and the application process.
