The export prohibition on wheat and wheat products was repealed by the government on Monday, August 24, 2026, with immediate effect. The administration stated that the action is intended to increase farmers’ revenue in the face of declining domestic prices.
The government permitted the export of 10 lakh tons of wheat products and 50 lakh tons of wheat at the beginning of this year.In an effort to curb soaring domestic prices, India, the second-largest producer of wheat in the world, banned wheat exports in May 2022.
The export policy of wheat is revised from prohibited to free with immediate effect, the Directorate General of Foreign Trade announced.
According to additional notices, the government has also lifted the export prohibition on wheat flour and other goods like wholemeal atta, semolina, and maida.
The export ban has been lifted in the interest of farmers,Food Secretary Sanjeev Chopra told PTI when questioned about the decision. At the moment, domestic wheat prices are low. Farmers will receive better prices if exports are permitted, as this will raise local market prices and promote excellent sowing in the upcoming Rabi season. Regarding the effect of consumer pricing, Mr. Chopra stated that the nation has enough wheat on hand to meet demand and control prices.
He noted that the export of wheat, which was previously permitted through the issuance of a license, has now been made simpler.
According to the secretary, 2.5 lakh tons of the 60 lakh tons that were previously permitted have already been sent.
In the 2025–2026 crop year (July–June), India produced a record 120.65 million tons of wheat, up from 117.94 million tons the year before.
Nearly 49 million tons of wheat are kept in buffer stock by the Food Corporation of India (FCI), the government’s designated organization for the distribution and acquisition of foreordains.
Government statistics show that on Monday, August 24, 2026, the average retail price of wheat in India was ₹31.46 per kg, while the rate of wheat flour was ₹37.3 per kg. When compared to the same period last year, the prices of wheat and wheat flour are flat.
