HCLFoundation, the corporate social responsibility arm of HCLTech, has partnered with the Urban Development Department of the Government of Uttar Pradesh to strengthen sustainable waste management and urban sanitation across Agra, Hardoi and Prayagraj. The collaboration aims to support the Swachh Bharat Mission by introducing technology-driven solutions, policy reforms and community-led initiatives to create cleaner and more sustainable cities.
The partnership was formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in Lucknow. Under the agreement, HCLFoundation and the state government will jointly work on strategic planning, pilot projects, process improvements and the deployment of IT-enabled systems to enhance municipal waste management. The initiative is designed to strengthen urban infrastructure while promoting environmentally responsible practices and improving sanitation standards across the three cities.
As part of the initiative, HCLFoundation has expanded its flagship My Clean City programme to Agra, Hardoi and Prayagraj. The programme focuses on citizen participation, scientific waste management and the adoption of innovative technologies to improve urban cleanliness. Officials believe that combining government support with CSR-led expertise will help develop scalable models for sustainable urban development that can be replicated in other parts of the state.
To strengthen waste collection and processing, HCLFoundation has donated 10 e-drain carts and 10 e-garbage loaders to the Hardoi Nagar Palika Parishad. The foundation has also installed three reverse vending machines that encourage citizens to dispose of plastic bottles responsibly by enabling recycling at the source. In addition, beautification projects featuring wall art have been undertaken to improve public spaces and raise awareness about cleanliness and environmental conservation.
The programme also includes plans to develop three model markets and three model wards in Hardoi. These locations will demonstrate improved waste segregation, efficient collection systems, better public sanitation and active community participation. The objective is to create practical examples of sustainable urban management that can inspire similar initiatives in other municipalities.
Speaking about the partnership, Alok Varma, Project Director for Samuday and My Clean City at HCLFoundation, said the initiative reflects the organisation’s commitment to reclaiming urban spaces through technology, innovation and citizen engagement. He noted that expanding the programme to new cities would further strengthen efforts to build cleaner and healthier communities while encouraging responsible waste management practices.
Anuj Kumar Jha, Secretary of the Urban Development Department and State Mission Director for Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban), said the collaboration combines institutional support with implementation expertise to accelerate urban sanitation efforts. He expressed confidence that the partnership would improve waste management systems, promote innovation and contribute to cleaner, healthier and more sustainable cities across Uttar Pradesh.
Launched in 2018, the My Clean City programme has already made a significant impact in Noida and Greater Noida. According to HCLFoundation, the initiative has sensitised nearly 750,000 citizens on responsible waste behaviour, trained over 100,000 stakeholders in waste management practices, managed more than 22,000 tonnes of waste and engaged over 3,500 school students through its Waste Champions Club. The latest partnership marks another step in expanding the programme’s reach while advancing sustainable urban development through collaborative CSR efforts.
